WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA 27 1 10

Office of the Chancellor

Telephone: (336) 750-2041

Dear Students:

On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, wc hope you will enjoy the 1998-99 Ram, your
family album of some of the most memorable times of your life. Treasure it as a personal
snapshot of your college years, the life long friends you made, that special professor who guided
you toward success, and the maturity you gained in the process. Captured on these pages are the
days that will shape your future.

For some, this year's edition is the bridge that will connect your undergraduate experiences with
your new role and responsibility as an alumnus of Winston-Salem State University. The social,
intellectual and emotional growth you have experienced here are a strong foundation for the
challenges and opportunities that await you.

For others, the 1998-99 Ram continues your collegiate career and leads you toward the next
stages of your academic, personal and professional endeavors.

1 offer best wishes for the happiest and warmest recollections of your days at WSSU. As you
view these pages in years to come, and recall the memories associated with them, please be
reminded that these were the times that bound you forever to Winston-Salem State University.
No matter where you are, you will never be far from your home here.

Sincerely,

Alvin J. Schexnider
Chancellor

i)on \ Quit

When things go wrong, as theij sometimes will,

Wiien the road you re tnidging seems all up liill.

Vilien the funds are low. and the debts are high,

^nd you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

W-lien care is pressing you down a bit,

^st if you must, but don't you quit.

Xife is queer with it's twists and tunis,

jls eveiyone of us sometimes learns,

^nd many of failure tunis about,

\Vlien he might have one had he stuck it out;

'i)on't give up though the pace seems slow,

you may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out,

The silver tent of the clouds of doubt,

j^nd you never can tell how close you are.

It maybe near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit.

It's when things seem worst, that you must not quit.

I came as a shadow,

I stand now a light;

TJie depth of my darkness

Transfigures your night.

My soul is a nocturne

So look where you are.

The radiance is soothing,

There's warmth in the light.

Relieve in yourself

'Relieve in youself

in the power you have

to control your own life, day by day

'Relieve in the strength

that you have deep inside,

and your faith will help

show you the way.

'Relieve in tommorow

and what it will bring-

let a hopefid heart carry you through,

GRADUATION
Life is our dictionary.

There is one soul.

It is related to the world.

Art is its action thereon.

Science finds its methods.

Literature is its record.

Religion is the emotion of reverence that it

inspires.

Ethics is the soul illustrated in human life.

Society is the finding of this soulin nature by labor.

Trades are the learning of the soul in nature by

labor.

Politics is the activity of the soul illustrated in
power.

Manners are silent and mediate expressions of
soul.

CLASS OF 1999

88

^Jiistory of Our Own....
Senior Classjiistory

Tlw Class of 1999 stalled their iiiatricitlatioii at Winstoii-Salciu Slate Universitij in llu fall of
1995, excited and ready to explore the world ofW-SSU and to see what theit "%h( Pride " was all
about. ,/Is freshman we had to learn to adapt to "College jCife". Thus we adapted vertj well to our
txew emirowuetit emd eleetrhj hved what had become emr university, and what it had to e)ffer
.fJenuecoming week for most ejfus was ixew and exciting. Tliere were a series e)feli(ferein activities
that were designed to biing togetherness. Tlie homecomiixg concert feeitured reip artist Cranel Puba
and the P^^B group SoulJ^or P^al. hi the spring of 1996, we enjoyed a spring pet f em nance by the
J^ugees. jllso in the sprii ig of I99(i. there weis a rally held in hemew of Minister fXmis -Farraklmn.

In the fall of 1990 we relumed to WSSVas sophomores under the leeidership e)f the present
SQyl president, Mr Craigjones. Our sophomore year was a success filled and productive one..
./Ifter a year of adapting (freshaman year,), it was time for the class of 1999 to charge toward the
future. . lis sophomores we became better equiped with the poloews and pe)lities ejfthe imiversities,
which played an impoitant role in the development of a sucessful class.. During the 1999 schexil
year the Tliompson center was opened to the student population. Do to the rally held the previous
year, Minister Xguis J^arakhan was allowed to speak on the campus ofWSS'il.JTis speech became
a point e)f nwtiv ation fen- many of the students in the class of 1999. Tlie spring semester came
eiroui id ejuickly, eind was full of exciting activities. -The spring conceit featured the new artist trika
Padu. Before we knew it , the end of our second year had anived.

Tlie class of 1999 was under the leadership of Qidnnethier Williams, the present Vice-
President of-SQ/L Tliefall of 1997. brought about charitible eippwtunities for the class ejf 1999.
with a charity auction sponsered by the class of 1999. .jllso the class of 1999 bremght smiles to the
faces of three underpriveledged children, by helping them ham a fun-filled Christmas. This year
was a demanding one, as the class coimcil provided fim and educational activities for the students
ofM-SSU to paiticipate in. Tlie homecoming shejw featured the popular rap Gremp Wu-tangand
the smooth voices of the R^P group 112. In the spring of 1998, the class of 1999 sponsored a
campus wide easier egg hunt, which marked the end of life as we knew it,fLm and exciting. Py the
end of our junior year we knew what had to be done, .so we awarded two carver students to help
them begin their collegiate years.

Tins, emr senior year is imder the leadership of Poriia Sharpless. We continued to be a
charitable class, with the second annual auction and a Tlianksgiving can drive.. JTomecoming this
year was a blast, featuringWyclef Jean and Goodie Mobb . Jfow as we continue to march toward
the end of this educatiemal journey, it is our goal to "Depait to Sene", not emly Winste)n-Salem
•State University, eis alumni, but eilso to scire others in our community and throughout the world.

We must not forget to recognize our class advisor who has been a great inspiration and
motivation to the class of 1999 since our freshman year, Dr Pettyj/IlexandeK During our years
here at WSSV, we have not only received a bachelor's degree in the many different majejrs. but we
have made many new friends and memories. Tliere were meiny members of the cleiss theit could not
stay with us for many reasons. We have matured and grown into sucessfiil young men and
women. We entered to learn in 199-5 and together we have experienced heartbreak and happiness.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF....

A STUDENT

So I jumped out of bed and turned on my cable
(I've been waiting on since my freshman year)
hoping to catch some early morning cartoons.
But you know they just don't make cartoons like
they used to (you know like "The Smurfs" or
"He-man"). After turning on the tv. I decided to

lay down for five more minutes. After my

thirty minute nap, I realized that I was going to
be late for class. So I ran to the shower to be
awakened completely by a battle between the
hot and cold water. Then I vigorously brushed
my pearly whites which had been stained with
"juice" from the night before. I carefully
selected my best t-shirt and a pair of jeans from
my simple wardrobe and headed out for my
eight o'clock class.

When I arrived at class I noticed that
everyone was trying to make last minute cheat
sheets for our quia. After a fifteen minute quia
and a thirty minute lecture, it was then forty-five
minutes after eight and everyone was packing
their backpacks (a sign to the professor that his
time is up).

Dear Diary,

It's me again the
professional student I
know it's been a while
since my last entry, but
I've been busy trying to
finish my english paper
that was due on last
friday.

After only three
hours of sleep and a major
battle with my alarm clock
I got up with every inten-
tion of having a good day.

90

After class I ran back to my room to take my
daily nap, stopping to talk to no one on the way. I
awakened from my nap just in time to go to the 'caf
before Ms. Armstrong closed the gate. After eating
some chicken left over from yesterday and arguing
with the 'caf lady because I wanted three cups instead
of two, I stopped by the post office to check my mail
box, only to see the same thing in there that was in
there yesterday, ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING!!.' I then
stopped at the game room to play one good game of
Mrs. Pac-man before my two o'clock class.

After class I decided to go to the library (for the
first time this semester) so that I could do my five page
paper that is due on tommorow. But no matter how
hard I tried, I could not focus. I think all the books
were distracting me.

Upon leaving the library I was encounterd by a
"local" (you know the non-students) who was just
cruising the campus because there was no one at the
sercurity booth. I wondered where in the world was
campus police at when I needed them. Then I
remebered that they were probably some where writ-
ing tickets to students who have parking decals but
nowhere to park. By now it was five o'clock p.m.. I
headed to the infirmary to pick up a sick note for my
nine o'clock class tommorow, simply because I do not
want to go. I then returned to the dorm in time
enough to watch the "Cosby Show" re-runs on UPN 48.
Well diary I guess that will be all for now so

Until tommorow

Some people don't like the way that

'SU' rocked...

The 54th Annual CIAA Tournament!!

...But they'll get over it...It's the RAM's time to shine!! Under the direction of 'a new
found fortune', coach Ricky Duckett and his assistants, Phillip Stitt and William McNeill,

the RAMS achieved a long awaited CIAA championship. It is through your efforts and

dedication to the school that you as a team have exceled above all others in the CIAA. To

be the CIAA basketball champions, brings great honor to WSSU, and has filled the hearts

of Rams and Ram fans everywhere. We knew that you could "Do It", and yes, you have

"Survived"....So it is with gratitude that we dedicate this yearbook to every member of

the 1999 Ram Basketball Team.
Now for a little history....The CIAA was founded in 1912 as the Colored
Intercolligiate Athletic Association. The CIAA is the oldest black athletic conference in

the nation. It is also one of the largest division II conference in the NCAA. The
membership of the CIAA involves Historically Black Colleges and Universities, spanning

the east coast from Maryland to North Carolina.

188

Did somebody say to " call Tyrone"? Tyrone Thomas

proved to be a key factor in the victory of the WSSU

Rams.. ..performing miracles, that even surprised him.

Ty" was also selected for the 1998-1999 All CIAA

basketball team. Ty' you da MAN! J

Larry Patterson, also known as 'L.P.', shows us
his defensive skills on the court.

Marcus Best, Better known as the "Rookie of the year",

looks forward to many more victories in the near future.

Marcus you are the "Best"!!

A Great Honor for WSSU..

This was indeed a great honor for WSSU that will leave a historical mark in

the history of the school. This was the first time in history that the board of

governers held a meeting on a college campus. This is also a significant

mark for WSSU because this is a HBCU ( Historically Black Collge and

University).

Just once more to speak your name;

and feel the warmth of your touch;

One more chance to see the face,

Of the one I love so much.

I know that God won't grant more time,

When my life here is through;

'But if he calls my name today,

I'll leave this world thinking of you. ^

I wish you tliebest

^ word from the Editor....

■To my fellow colleagues, falculty and staff and the parents of students at WSS'^.....

It has tndy been a pleasure creating memories for you and I am glad that I had the oppurtunity to show
my '%am ^ride"by doing so. ^ut, as you can imagine creating the 1999 edition of "The ^am" yearbook has
been a challenge for me. I've encountered many different obstacles during my reign as editor-in-chief but it is by
the g-ace of God that I have been able to achieve and reach my goal. During my reigii as editor, endless nights
and broken promises were my "best fiends ", but through it all I sunived. I tndy believe that all I have endured
will prepare me for the hardships and trials that I will encounter in thefiiture. I can finally agree with the words oj
my late imcle rUncle ,J:ee") that jIll I can do is the best I can do'. The creation of this yearbook that you see before
you is my best accomplishment thus far. I ask that you will understand that I am only human and I am not
peifect, I never claimed to be.

ji message to the senior class....

Somebody Said it Couldn't ^e <£>one

Somebody said it couldn't be done,

But with a chuckle he replied

Tliat "Maybe it couldn't, " but he would be one

Tliat wouldn't say so till he'd tried.

So he buckled right in with a trace ofagiin

On his face. If he worried he hit it.

JTe started to sing as he tackled that tiding

Tlwt couldn't be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: "Oh you 'II never do that;

^h least no one has ever done it";

'But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,

jind the first thing we knew he'd begun it.

With a lift of his chin and a bit of a giin

Without any doubt orquiddit,

JTe started to sing as he tackled that thing

Tliat couldn't be done and he did it.

Tliere are thousands to tell you that it coidd not be done,

Tlwre are thousands to prophesy failure,

Tliere are thousands to point out to you, one by one.

The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in will} a bit of a grin

Just take off your coat and go to it;

Just stari to .sing as you tackle the thing

TJiat "Cannot be done, " and you 'II do it.
